US Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program at Virginia Tech
About
- Through its relationship with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary New River Valley Flotilla (83) and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, AUP at Virginia Tech seeks to develop well-rounded and experienced future military officer candidates and government leaders while supporting the Coast Guard Auxiliary's critical missions.
- AUP at Virginia Tech provides its members with countless opportunities in areas such as recreational boating safety (RBS), sea and air operations, marine safety and environmental protection, communications, public affairs, public education, and more!
- Many of the students in AUP at Virginia Tech are cadets, however, we highly encourage civilians interested in learning about military service, seamanship, volunteering, or leadership to inquire about joining the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
- Many of our students are also looking to commission as officers in the military, generally through the Coast Guard. Because Virginia Tech is a Senior Military College (SMC), cadets who wish to pursue a commission in the Coast Guard get exclusive access to apply for the USCG Direct Commission Selected School (DCSS) program which reduces initial officer training from 12 weeks to 5 weeks! Participation in AUP also provides significant benefits when applying for these officer programs as it puts you well above other applicants without this experience.
- Not all students plan to commission, and we are still committed to assisting all of our students in finding private or public sector jobs that they are passionate about.
- Another unique benefit of the Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program is access to amazing internships with active duty Coast Guard units! You could spend your summer doing boat operations at a small boat station, learning search and rescue (SAR) operations at a Sector headquarters, getting to fly in helicopters at an Air Station, or being out on the ocean on a cutter. The opportunities are endless and are only available through the Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program.
